Planned paving can save the environment

Garth McMillan, production and quality manager of Bosun Brick explores responsible water management by means of permeable paving.

Architects, engineers, contractors and manufacturers can assist the greater urban environment with responsible water management. This can be achieved by using permeable paving as a sustainable method of preventing flooding and surface water collection.

Controlling water movement into the municipal water drainage systems is the key to preventing flooding, as is providing suitable water harvesting and retention where required. The problem with traditional road surfaces is that they are designed to be impervious to rain water and the ingress of pollutants. If water is allowed to ingress the road surface, this can cause weakness, discolouration and accelerated abrasion of the surface. Once there is too much water absorption in the base and sub-base, the end result is a road riddled with potholes due to particle migration.

On a conventional road surface, water is channelled into a storm water drain. This system is extremely effective, the problem is that it is too effective and in a downpour the drainage system is overloaded very quickly.  This can result in localised flooding, downstream flooding, property damage and in severe cases, human tragedy. The consequences of downstream flooding are that localised eco-system precipitation retention is reduced and road pollutants are carried to the downstream eco-system. Flooding can also cause harsh environmental damage with soil erosion and top soil removal.

There is no such thing as maintenance-free paving. David Wertheim Aymes, CEO of the Bosun Group, says that a well planned cleaning and maintenance programme is the only way to ensure that the overall appearance of your paving will be enhanced.

Wertheim Aymes provides the following tips and tricks to keep paving in tip-top shape:

General cleaning

Regular hosing and sweeping will keep your paving looking clean. To remove general dirt and debris, you should hose down your paving and sweep it with a hard bristled outdoor broom regularly. If the paving is soiled, scrub the area with a general purpose, pH neutral/slightly alkaline, non-abrasive cleaner, using a hard bristled brush or broom together with some elbow grease.
